Rooney fires United top against Liverpool

Wayne Rooney scored twice to give Manchester United a 2-1 Premier League win over Liverpool at Old Trafford - with Luis Suarez again the centre of attention.Reds boss Kenny Dalglish had insisted that Suarez - back from an eight-match ban for a racial incident with Patrice Evra - would shake hands with his foe before kick-off; but the Uruguayan provoked the hosts by snubbing the Frenchman’s peace offering. It provoked an angry if controlled reaction from Evra, with Rio Ferdinand rejecting Suarez in a tit-for-tat response to set the tone for the day.The childishness led to an unsavoury atmosphere that spilled into the tunnel at half-time: a confrontation between players from both sides was reportedly broken up by police, and there was some jostling after the final whistle as Evra celebrated with the home fans.Back to the football and United took a quickfire 2-0 lead early in the second half thanks to the poacher’s instinct of the in-form Rooney; Suarez pulled one back from close range late on.Liverpool pushed for an equaliser but were denied by a good save from David De Gea as United held on to the three points to move a point clear of Manchester City, who face Aston Villa on Sunday. The first half was a cagey affair, with United dominating possession but struggling to break down Liverpool’s packed defence and midfield: the hosts went close with a Paul Scholes header that Pep Reina kept out with a reflex stop, while good defending from Daniel Agger prevented a Rooney tap-in after fine wing-play by the bubbly Daniel Welbeck. The visitors mostly struggled to get out of their half but, when they did, looked fairly threatening: Glen Johnson pinged a low drive just wide, while - just before half-time - Ferdinand stopped Suarez racing clean through past Evra with a fine sliding tackle, although Liverpool felt he fouled his man.Referee Phil Dowd had kept a lid on the anger during play but it threatened to get nasty as both sides left the pitch at the break: United players attempted to have words with Suarez, with Dowd appearing to calm things as they entered the tunnel. However, it soon emerged that players from both sides became embroiled away from the cameras.Suarez may like to write his own headlines, but Rooney does a pretty good job of it himself, although for the right reasons in recent weeks. The second half could have been a scrappy, niggly affair but within a minute of the restart the England striker had opened the scoring with a thumping volley from a Ryan Giggs corner that arrived at his feet via a failed interception from Jordan Henderson. Two minutes later and Rooney had a second, sliding a cool low finish through the legs of Reina after Antonio Valencia picked the dithering Jay Spearing’s pocket.Liverpool were shell-shocked and Rooney threatened to run riot, seeing a ferocious long-range strike chalked off for a debatable foul by Johnny Evans in the build-up, and putting a sitter wide after a delightful step-over from Scholes. While United had come out buoyant, Liverpool - and Suarez - seemed strangely subdued, barely making an impact on United’s final third for much of the second half.Indeed the rekindling of the Suarez saga appeared to relax the hosts if anything as they played some of their best football since the early-season 8-2 thrashing of Arsenal.Perhaps they were too relaxed as, with 10 minutes remaining, some slack defending on Charlie Adam’s straight free-kick into the box saw the ball allowed into the six-yard box, where it ricocheted off the body of Ferdinand to allow Suarez - of course - a simple finish from close range.Liverpool sensed an unlikely comeback and it was almost completed when Johnson hit a clean, rising drive from range after United cleared an injury-time corner: much like against Chelsea last weekend, De Gea was equal to it with a fine tip over.United took the ball into the corner and the final whistle soon came, with Evra’s bounding celebrations with the home fans ignored by Suarez but not his team-mates, who had to be ushered away from the Frenchman.Whatever one's view on the Suarez-Evra question, the significance of the result cannot be doubted - United are top, although possibly for one day only, while Liverpool are four points short of Chelsea.

United comeback stuns Chelsea

Manchester United came from three goals down to draw 3-3 at Chelsea in a pulsating Premier League match at Stamford Bridge.Second-half trikes from Juan Mata and David Luiz added to a first-half own-goal by Jonny Evans that flattered the hosts somewhat. But United raised their game and, spearheaded by Wayne Rooney – who netted two penalties – they drew level with Chelsea thanks to a late Javier Hernandez header.David De Gea made an incredible late save to deny Mata’s wonderful free-kick, with the Spaniard tipping over a Gary Cahill effort at the death as the spoils were shared in West London. The result means United are two points behind leaders Manchester City, while fourth-placed Chelsea edge a point ahead of Newcastle.

United beat Stoke to go level at top

The result was never in any doubt as United scored a penalty in either half, courtesy of Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov.Stoke created next to nothing in attack in a largely forgettable game, and were lucky not to concede another clear-cut penalty with 20 minutes to go.United made light of Wayne Rooney's continued absence, while Ben Amos kept a clean sheet on his first start in goal. The 21-year-old came for David De Gea, who was officially listed as ill, but it was no surprise to see him taken out of the firing line after a nightmare performance against Liverpool in the FA Cup on Saturday. The away side had 26 per cent possession in the first half and no shots on target. United were also pedestrian in a surprisingly lacklustre opening period. The first incident of note came as Hernandez got to the by-line, just a couple of yards from goal. He elected to shoot rather than cross and his effort flew into the side netting.Just a couple of minutes later and Paul Scholes turned back time as he very nearly scored what would have been a classic Scholes goal. Following a corner, Berbatov nudged it back to the veteran midfielder, who smashed an effort on the half volley from 20 yards inches wide.Michael Carrick breached the Stoke defence 10 minutes from half time after being played in by an excellent reverse ball from Berbatov, but his first time effort went agonisingly wide of the far post.United wouldn’t have long to wait though as just five minutes later Jermainne Pennant brought down Park Ji-Sung in the box, and Hernandez stepped up to send Thomas Sorensen the wrong way.It didn’t take long for United to double their lead in the second period. Jonathan Walters, chasing Antonio Valencia, inexplicably tugged his man in the area after 52 minutes in one of the most clear cut penalties you’ll ever see.Strangely, it was Berbatov who took the penalty even with Hernandez still on the pitch. It didn’t matter though as the Bulgarian slotted it right into the corner, Sorenson going the right way, but unable to get there. After 71 minutes an almost equally clear cut penalty should have been given as Patrice Evra was brought down from behind when darting into the area. Perhaps aware he’d given two already though, Mike Jones waved play on.Paul Pogba made a late appearance for United and looked very impressive during his cameo, sending in a series of dangerous crosses from the right.Berbatov missed a sitter late on, but it didn’t matter. Manchester City will be very worried indeed.

2012 Liverpool-Manchester United Kuyt - 0

Kuyt strikes late as Liverpool beat United
The substitute lashed the ball past David De Gea in the 88th minute to complete a memorable week for Liverpool, three days after they reached the Carling Cup final with an aggregate win over Manchester City.Daniel Agger headed Liverpool in front on 21 minutes after a De Gea mistake, before Park Ji-Sung restored parity with a crisp finish six minutes before half-time.Kuyt settled an even game after he escaped the attentions of Patrice Evra, ran onto an Andy Carroll flick-on, and found the bottom of the United net to send manager Kenny Dalglish into raptures.Evra was booed throughout due to his involvement in the Luis Suarez case that opened a deep rift between the two clubs.Suarez, who received an eight-match ban after an independent FA commission found him guilty of racially abusing the Frenchman, watched on from the stands with his family and celebrated the winning goal wildly.Evra received predictably vociferous jeers whenever he touched the ball, but thankfully the hostility did not spill over into anything more than verbals. It was unfortunate that he should end up committing a vital error, though he is joined in the United dog house by De Gea who had a miserable afternoon. He Spaniard is a talented 21-year-old with a bright future, but at present he is a liability on set pieces. He is indecisive when coming for the ball, a hesitant puncher and too seldom assets himself physically.Liverpool targeted this weakness, but placing a crowd of players, including Andy Carroll, in front of De Gea on corners. The move paid dividends when Gerrard delivered from the left on 21 minutes. The goalkeeper, preoccupied with Carroll, found himself caught in no-man's land and Agger planted a firm header into the net - grazing the top of De Gea's head en route.Thereafter, De Gea was a nervous wreck, spilling simple catches, misplacing passes and appearing terrified by Carroll. Anders Lindegaard can expect to return to the United goal against Stoke on Tuesday. However, having taken the initiative, Liverpool immediately surrendered it, dropping deeper and deeper in an attempt to cut out United's passing lanes.Initially it worked, with United unable to turn ample possession into chances. However, they broke through when Rafael ran onto an Antonio Valencia flick, beat Jose Enrique and crossed low for Park, who made true contact and sent his first-time shot past Reina into the bottom-right corner.United continued to control the game in midfield thanks to fine performances from Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes. Both had completed 100 passes by the time the exhausted Scholes went off 15 minutes from time. But the introduction of Javier Hernandez backfired as Liverpool started to control the midfield battle.Kuyt failed to get sufficient power on a header from a Jose Enrique cross but the warning signs were there. Then, two minutes from time, United crumbled in seemingly innocuous circumstances. Carroll got his head to a booming clearance but there should have been no imminent danger. However, Evra lagged and Kuyt was through on goal - the shot was close to De Gea but had enough power to beat the beleaguered goalkeeper. The reverberations were felt across the North-West. Is King Kenny really bringing the glory days back to Anfield?

In an initial five-year deal worth £500,000, Sharp Electronics became the club's first shirt sponsor at the beginning of the 1982–83 season, a relationship that lasted until the end of the 1999–2000 season, when Vodafone agreed a four-year, £30 million deal.Vodafone agreed to pay £36 million to extend the deal by four years, but after two seasons triggered a break clause in order to concentrate on its sponsorship of the Champions League.
To commence at the start of the 2006–07 season, American insurance corporation AIG agreed a four-year £56.5 million deal which in September 2006 became the most valuable in the world. At the beginning of the 2010–11 season, American reinsurance company AON became the club's principal sponsor in a four-year deal reputed to be worth approximately £80 million, making it the most lucrative shirt sponsorship deal in football history. Manchester United announced their first training kit sponsor in August 2011, agreeing a four-year deal with DHL reported to be worth £40 million; it is believed to be the first instance of training kit sponsorship in English football.
The club's first kit manufacturer was Umbra, until a five-year deal was agreed with Admiral Sportswear in 1975.Adidas received the contract in 1980, before Umbro started a second spell in 1992. Umbro's sponsorship lasted for ten years, followed by Nike's record-breaking £302.9 million deal that will last until 2015; 3.8 million replica shirts were sold in the first 22 months with the company. In addition to Nike and Aon, the club also has several lower-level "platinum" sponsors, including Audi and Budwieser.

Sir Alex Ferguson is certain Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck will get his chance to shine at Euro 2012.

Two years ago, Ferguson claimed Welbeck was good enough to force his way into the Fabio Capello's World Cup  squad. A series of niggling injuries prevented the then teenager from developing as quickly as his manager had forecast.Welbeck finally made his England  debut last March and has subsequently made substitute appearances against both Montenegro and Spain. And Ferguson is in no doubt the 21-year-old will make Capello's final cut for this summer's Finals in Poland and Ukraine.I think he will be (in the squad)," said the United boss. "He is developing into a very strong athlete and when he gets moving, he is really quick."He was always a decent goalscorer but when he plays regularly for us he has been getting a goal a game."

Alex Ferguson has been manager of Manchester United since November 1986.
Alex Ferguson and his assistant Archie Knox arrived from Aberdeen on the day of Atkinson's dismissal, and guided the club to an 11th-place finish in the league. Despite a second-place finish in 1987-88, the club was back in 11th place the following season. Reportedly on the verge of being dismissed, victory over Crystal Palace in the 1990 FA Cup Final replay (after a 3–3 draw) saved Ferguson's career. The following season, Manchester United claimed its first Cup Winner's Cuptitle and competed in the 1991 UEFA Super Cup, beating European Cup holders Red Star Belgrade 1–0 in the final at Old Trafford. A second consecutive League Cup final appearance followed in 1992, in which the team beat Nottingham Forest 1–0 at Wembley. In 1993, the club won its first league title since 1967, and a year later, for the first time since 1957, it won a second consecutive title – alongside the FA Cup – to complete the first "Douuble" in the club's history.

Ryan Giggs is the most decorated player in English football history.
In the 1981-82 , Manchester United became the first team to win the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League – "The Treble" – in the same season. Losing 1–0 going into injury time in the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskajaer scored late goals to claim a dramatic victory over Bayern Munich, in what is considered one of the greatest comebacks of all time. The club also won the Intercontinental Cup after beating Palmeiras 1–0 in Tokyo.Ferguson was subsequently knighted for his services to football.
Manchester United won the league again in the 1999-2000 and 2000-01 seasons. The team finished as runners-up in 2001-02, before regaining the title in 2002-03. They won the 2003-04 FA Cup, beating Millwall 3–0 in the final at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff. In the 2005-06 season Manchester United failed to qualify for the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in over a decade, but recovered to secure a second-place league finish and victory over Wigan Athletic in the 2006 Football League Cup Final. The club regained the Premier League in the 2006–07 and 2007–08 seasons, and completed the European double by beating Chelsea 6–5 on penalties in the 2008 UEFA Champions League Final in Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. Ryan Giggs made a record 759th appearance for the club in this game, overtaking previous record holder Bobby Charlton. In December 2008, the club won the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup and followed this with the 2008-09 Football League Cup, and its third successive Premier League title. That summer, Cristiano Ronaldo was sold to Real Madrid for a world record £80 million.In 2010, Manchester United defeated Aston Villa 2–1 at Wembley to retain the League Cup, its first successful defence of a knockout cup competition.
After finishing as runner-up to Chelsea in the 2009–10 season, United achieved a record 19th league title in 2010–11, securing the championship with a 1–1 away draw against Blackburn Rovers on 14 May 2011.
